SQM Challenge "More Lithium, less footprint"

Applications closed

Faced with the environmental and social challenges in which the world is immersed, it is essential to promote the use of renewable energies to reduce the carbon footprint and increase the well-being of society. In this context, lithium-ion batteries play a relevant role by enabling energy storage, allowing subsequent consumption in fixed sources and in sustainable means of transport.

At SQM, we have been playing a fundamental role in the production of sustainable lithium for years, always looking for new technologies and ways to continue reducing the world's carbon footprint. For this reason, we consider it vitally important to find innovative solutions that bring electromobility and stationary energy storage closer to the communities that need it most, so that together we can actively collaborate towards the transition and sustainable growth of the country.

We invite all R&D centers and universities, SMEs, startups, and developing initiatives that have proposals that contribute and generate a positive impact on these initiatives to participate in the SQM Open Innovation call “More Lithium, less footprint” .

We are looking for innovative proposals with social and environmental impact that respond to the following challenges:

1st Place: USD 50,000.-

2nd Place: USD 30,000.-

3rd Place: USD 20,000.-

In addition to:

  • Support for the development of a pilot of your business

  • Executive mentoring with SQM experts

Pitch Day and awards

I. Electromobility

Proposals that promote the development of electromobility in Chile, preferably those that generate value in remote, isolated or vulnerable sectors, contributing to accessible and more energy efficient transport.

  • Challenge 1 -  Vehicle energy storage technologies:  Improve the performance of lithium batteries in: drones, scooters, bicycles, cars, heavy vehicles, among others, through new designs, components or software.

  • Challenge 2 - Electric vehicle charging points: Improve lithium battery charging technology in light and heavy vehicles, and its distribution network and infrastructure.

  • Challenge 3 -  New business models for electric vehicles: Improve access and availability of vehicles with lithium batteries, allowing the scope of this technology to be increased.

II. Stationary Storage

Proposals that extend the use of storage technologies preferably in remote, isolated or vulnerable sectors, which do not have access to the electricity grid or have intermittent supply, in order to promote self-generation and self-consumption.

  • Challenge 4 -  Stationary energy storage technologies and their management: Improve the performance of storage systems based on lithium batteries through new designs, components or software.

  • Challenge 5 - New business models for stationary energy storage: Promote new uses and applications that improve the access and scope of these technologies.
